Much of our professional happiness comes from the quality of our relationships at work. We spend most of our day interacting with people, resolving conflict, collaborating on projects, and having to make decisions as we work with those who have different mindsets and personalities and are of other generations.
Does a strong self-identity, an individuality of conviction and self-belief help us have better relationships with our colleagues? Or does coming across as firm, determined, and resolute distance others and even strain workpl ace dynamics?
What are the qualities of a strong and influential personality? It is one of self-confidence, conviction, courage, resilience and action.
Here, we look at how each of these traits helps build better relationships with our co-workers, bosses, and partners.
Confidence
Being self-assured allows us to shift the focus from ourselves to others. We are not consumed with how we come across, but instead, we focus on what we can do to make things better, on what we can offer. We do not hide but show up and are ready to be part of something, to take a chance on ourselves and others.
We are a truer self, and people see us for what we are. We do not send mixed signals or camouflage but share our views with confidence, helping people make decisions with more clarity and speed.

Conviction
With conviction, we form an opinion. To have an opinion, we need to listen, think and weigh. We are not wishy-washy, indecisive or lacking in originality, but instead, we are passionate, back-boned, and stand up for people. We are firm and determined in difficult situations, with clear objectives and focused direction.
We do not stay away and play it safe but voice ourselves with an influencing power that comes from our principles. We give out an air of certitude that is comforting and makes a difference.
Action-oriented
To believe is one thing, and to have the courage to act on that belief is another. In doing so, we encourage others to move forward and do their bit.
We do not sit on the fence or wait for others to take the first step, but instead, we become leaders, ready to take responsibility and be accountable for our actions. In this way, we promote and encourage healthy collaboration.
Courage
We do not avoid difficult conversations but initiate dialogue to resolve them. We believe in open communication and do not shy away from disagreement or rejection. When we see injustice or partiality, we do not hesitate to address it. We gain trust from those we work with and build on mutual respect.
Resilience
A spirit to fight to keep going when things are tough is a sign of a strong personality. We do not break under pressure but hold the fort. We have the grit to keep going and build optimism in the worst of times. We have tenacity and determination that come from an inner resolve and inner strength to look at what can work rather than what is not working.
We put a piece of steel in our spine and march forward, taking others with us. And so we raise our people’s spirit, giving them strength and support. We exude certain dependability through our tenacity and composure.
Community
We hear that the people we work with often become like our family. Some of the most precious friendships and life-long relationships have come through work. This bond and camaraderie give us a sense of community and keep us motivated as it brings success to an organisation.
Happy people, a sense of belonging, open communication, collaboration, and encouragement are all possible when we form strong personalities. Things are not always smooth sailing. There are times when we need to act, speak, show up, and take a stand for the good of all.
